SAB & SuDS
As of January 7th 2019, all new developments in Wales, where the construction area is of 100m2 or more, sustainable drainage is required to manage on-site surface water. Surface water drainage systems must be designed and built in accordance with mandatory standards for sustainable drainage published by Welsh Ministers. These systems must be approved by the local authority acting in its SuDS Approving Body (SAB) role before construction work begins.
With our traditional drainage systems under increasing pressure from the effects of climate change, urbanisation and a growing population; sustainable drainage is becoming an increasingly important consideration in planning developments.
SuDS mimic nature and typically manage rainfall close to where it falls. SuDS can be designed to transport (convey) surface water, slow runoff down (attenuate) before it enters watercourses, they provide areas to store water in natural contours and can be used to allow water to soak (infiltrate) into the ground or evaporated from surface water and lost or transpired from vegetation (known as evapotranspiration).
